Waking up before the sun when you’re on vacation sounds like a borderline criminal. But some places? They’ll make you forget the snooze button ever existed. Some moments are worth setting an alarm for (yes, even on holiday). There’s just something magical about watching the world stretch and yawn under a slow, golden glow. The quiet, the calm, the colors are just pure main character energy.
So here it is: a global sunrise bucket list for all my early bird adventurers and golden-hour chasers. Grab your coffee and your camera as we’re heading to the prettiest places on Earth to watch the sun come up.
1. Borobudur Temple, Indonesia

Borobudur Temple in Indonesia is one of the largest ancient temples and also top in the list of UNESCO. But little did you know that this place also offers a beautiful sunrise that is worth visiting. Mesmerizing right? Imagine you are standing at this ancient temple and soft golden light spills over hundreds of stupas. This is one of those “is this real life?” moments. Yes it is! It’s peaceful, spiritual and slightly surreal.
Although sunrise tickets are limited, it feels exclusive in the best way.
Pro tip: Go for the special sunrise tour, yes, it’s early and yes, it’s worth every sleepy step. Don’t forget to bring layers, because predawn chill is no joke, and don’t forget your camera to take instagram worthy pictures.
2. Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA

It’s a fact that the Grand Canyon offers one of the most famous examples around the world of geological phenomenon which is known as the Great Unconformity. The Grand Canyon is impressive any time of day, but sunrise? That’s when it really shows off. It has the prettiest sunshine? Trust me when I say this that sunrise at the Grand Canyon isn’t just pretty, it’s dramatic!
When the sun rises over this geological masterpiece, its shadows stretch dramatically across its layered cliffs, and the canyon walls shift through shades of purple, orange, and pink like they’re trying on outfits.
Pro tip: Hopi Point is one of the best sunrise spots, and it’s worth the early start. Bring a blanket, a thermos of coffee, and someone to say “wow” with. It’s that kind of moment.
3. Mount Bromo, Indonesia

Mount Bromo, Indonesia is one of the iconic Indonesian volcanoes. It is an active volcano near the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Watching the sunrise at this place, feels like you’ve landed on another planet. Mount Bromo doesn’t do “subtle.” Mount Bromo’s sunrise is hauntingly beautiful—and totally worth the hike (or jeep ride, if that’s more your style).
How to do it: Most travelers stay in nearby Cemoro Lawang and start the journey to the viewpoint around 3 a.m. It’s an early start, but it feels like a sunrise safari.
4. Oia, Santorini, Greece

Sure, Santorini sunsets get all the love, but sunrises? Total hidden gem. Oia has the most iconic white buildings and blue domes and with the light of sunrise? They glow! The peacefulness is unreal. Plus, you’ll beat the crowds and have those dreamy alleys all to yourself.
Best spot: The soft morning glow on the caldera is everything.
Pro tip: Pack a breakfast picnic and enjoy it with a view. Bonus points if it includes Greek yogurt and local honey.
5. Haleakalā Crater, Maui, Hawaii

Hawaii is a dream destination for many of us. They don’t call it the “House of the Sun” for nothing. There’s a reason! Sunrise here feels like watching the Earth wake up from the top of the world, literally. It feels like stepping onto another planet.
At over 10,000 feet above sea level, the clouds often sit below you, and the sky turns into a pastel masterpiece before the sun even peeks over the horizon.
Note: You do need a reservation to access the summit for sunrise, so book in advance. Wear warm, it’s cold up there. Like, seriously cold.
6. Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Angkor Wat, Cambodia is greatly admired for its grandeur and harmony of the architecture of the temple. And this place is on just about every travel bucket list for a reason. Watching the sun rise behind the iconic temple gives the experience that you will never forget! It is pure poetry. The sky often turns cotton-candy pink before warming into gold, and the whole scene feels like a cinematic view.
Note: You’ll want a good spot by the pond, so arrive before 5:00 a.m. Yes, there will be other tourists, but the vibe is surprisingly serene like everyone collectively agrees to whisper and just soak it in.
7. Gokyo Ri, Nepal

Nepal is widely famous for its mountain ranges. And sunrise at Gokyo Ri is a power move. This is one of the Himalayan sunrises to chase. You’ll see four of the world’s tallest mountains which also includes Mount Everest. You’ll see Everest glowing in the early light, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and glacial lakes. It’s pure mountain magic.
However, it’s challenging to get to (multi-day trek, altitude, yak traffic), but if you’re up for the adventure, it’s one of the most awe-inspiring views on Earth.
8. Tulum, Mexico

Tulum’s sunrise comes with a side of ancient history. Tulum is all about laid-back vibes, but sunrise here feels bold and cinematic. As the sun rises over the Caribbean Sea, you can watch it from the cliffs near the Mayan ruins. Seriously, could it be more photogenic? The light dances on turquoise waters while the jungle wakes up behind you.
Perfect for: Romantic mornings, solo soul-searching, or just beating the beach yoga crowd.
9. Mount Fuji, Japan

There’s a word in Japanese just for this experience: Goraiko, or “arrival of light.” It’s a rite of passage for climbers, and witnessing the first light of day from Japan’s most iconic peak is seriously awe-inspiring.
Note: It requires a night hike, but that makes the sunrise feel even more rewarding. Pack layers, snacks, and a strong will.
Watching the sunrise while the world is still sleepy is one of the most underrated joys of travel. It’s a gentle reminder that every day is a fresh start especially when you’re chasing it somewhere beautiful.
So… are you setting that alarm tomorrow?
